This game has a very interesting premise: return from the dead with a bad case of amnesia, and find out who you were back when you were alive, and how you came to die. Uncover your unfinished business, and finish it!
The design is also pretty! It's simple, consistent, and sleek, so reading through the one-pager doesn't tire out the eyes, guiding you along its contents smoothly.
Yet, Unforgotten Memories' strongest point is not the premise or its sleek aesthetics, it's the mechanics. When you're in a stressful scenario, roll to see how you deal with it/what happens, and choose which emotion is most relevant in the scenario. Each emotion comes in a pair of 2 (think like "Love and Hate"), which is quite elegant. This isn't just a "succeed or fail" either! The results on those rolls will push the world closer to breaking apart, and yourself closer to figuring out who you were, and what you desired when you were still breathing.
But, what I like most about this is the "Memories" mechanic. When your character remembers something, you get to choose what question a flashback will answer, paint the scene, add some characters in there, then you play the scene out. The other players, INCLUDING the GM, plays out as these characters, and you decide when the question's been answered, and when this scene ends. So, in a session of play, you're going to play more than one character, whether or not you're the GM or a player. That's just... such a cool idea!!
But, my table found that we would've liked some more information, especially as we're not familiar with the source material. More prompts for Memories and the questions we can ask, clearer wording in some places, clarity on how Starting Connections work and how many people they're meant to affect, and for how long. However this is a natural drawback of the one-sheet style.
We also found the game to last about 2 to 3 sessions, rather than one, but such is the way of things!
