You can right click to exit the build menu.  It's not stated anywhere, sorry.

Here's a known bug:  You can place a turret on top of another turret.  It appears to do nothing, but there's actually two perfectly stacked.  I'm hoping that's what you saw here.  If not, I have a larger problem.
