I love so much that you made a gameboy style manual for this!

The Fool’s Gold/jester idea ties the theme into the character and relics cleanly.

The jester design and animations are great, the hand-drawn map gives it a 90s adventure feel. Sound design is also very good. Charming platformer with tons of Game Boy soul.

We weren’t really going for gross-out humour. After Snake, one of our biggest references was the original Tamagotchi games on Game Boy.

Those games treat things like poop, hunger, and even your pet dying as part of this cute, goofy virtual-pet world. That was much closer to the tone we wanted: weird and a bit ridiculous, but still cute rather than gross.

There’s some very cool stuff happening graphically too. The experimental pixel look reminded me a bit of Proteus on PS Vita, especially the way the world and shadows are handled.

Giving you a follow and adding this to a collection. Looking forward to seeing more from you.

Would love to see you play my game! I just rated yours, thought it was very promising.

Charming! A Game Boy game set in a record store is a  great fit for the theme, and the “Solid Gold!” works.

The art and animation already have a lot of personality, especially the dance/spin animation. I’d definitely like to see where you take this after the jam.

Hey everyone! I’ve been having a great time playing the jam games with .gb and .gbc downloads on my Game Boy, so I put together a list of the ones I’ve found in case anyone else wants to play offline too.

Our game, Kota Chomp, is also available as a .gb file. We’d love to hear what you think! If I’ve missed your .gb or .gbc download, feel free to share it here too.

Thanks for the thoughtful review! If we take the game further, I definitely want to make the mechanics more intuitive. We’ve already talked about starting with a slower intro level that teaches things one at a time instead of throwing everything at you at once.

There isn’t another evolution yet, but we have ideas. The next stage would make Kota about horse-sized, with the world shifting into more of a Pokémon-style overworld where houses suddenly look small next to you. After that, truck-sized Kota in a city, and eventually a planet-eating space god Kota lol.

The intro is awesome, the animations are super fluid, and the particle effects are very cool. Also, is there a trophy system? That’s impressive. The soundtrack absolutely rules too.

Definitely one of the quirkiest entries I’ve played.

Your game is awesome. The art, the story, and the way it ties into the theme all work really well.

I loved the suspenseful music in the opening cinematic. The soundtrack does a great job setting the mood from scene to scene. The industrial-sounding track on the level select especially made me feel like an old god menacingly planning world domination lol.

I’m also surprised I haven’t seen more games lean into the Cthulhu/Old God angle, but I’m glad you did. Being able to change the palette was a nice touch too.

Very ambitious game, and really impressive for a solo jam entry. Amazing art.

Very happy to have this on my Game Boy! I’ll be playing more on the commute next week. I wish more people included GB files with their games.

The rule screen makes everything easy to understand right away. With just a few simple rules, it turns into a very puzzling puzzle game. The art is really cute and charming and the music fits it very nicely.

Really good game.  Stands on its own merit! I'll be playing this one long after the jam ends. I  gave you guys a follow in the hopes you add more levels!

I was a big fan of this drawing.

Very fun memory game. My only complaint is that I’d like the drink selection to always reset to the same spot, probably the left. Right now it stays on whatever item you picked last, which makes it harder to plan your inputs in advance. I wanted to be able to think, “two left, one right, then lemon.”

The pixel art is charming and reminds me of the original Tamagotchi on Game Boy. Had a ton of fun with this. Thanks for making it!

I definitely got some classic Pokémon inspiration from the look and feel, and Professor Maple made me chuckle.

I found the whole thing really relaxing to play. Hunting down the worms with the radar was fun, and I liked that it wasn’t built around frantic combat.

The world art has a ton of detail, the music is really good, and this has a lot of Game Boy soul.

Haha, the universal pet experience. Poop eating.

Thanks for the kind words about the art and audio! Give your rabbit our regards from Kota lol.

Nooo! You have to get Kota to 100 length to become a Golden God! jk It's okay if you don't, we really appreciate the play and the review!

Spoilers Kota evolves into a much bigger Kota at 100, which makes everything harder because suddenly you’re trying to navigate the same board with way less room.

I’m glad the game is landing as funny. By the time we were putting the itch page together, we were pretty sleep deprived and the humour definitely got weirder.

That said, the core idea was conceived while fully rested and sober, so we can’t really blame the lack of sleep.

There definitely are some issues with evolved Kota. We left that part until last because we weren’t sure we’d have enough time to get it in.

I’m really glad we managed to include it though, because otherwise the game wouldn’t have a punchline.

We have ideas for more levels and a few more twists, but first we should finish turning this poop into gold lol.

Thanks for the review! And yes not a problem, we've left a review and rating. Your game was great. Would love to be able to play it on Game Boy hardware!

Hmmm... both of us played a ton of Snake on our Nokia 3310s, and our animator loves CatDog.

You might have psychoanalyzed us down to a tee. Just don’t ask about our mothers lol.

Just to add some context, that’s the default GB Studio scene transition and it’s based on how the original Game Boy display behaves.

On the original non-backlit LCD, the pixels fade back toward the screen’s natural background and the effect reads much more softly. On a modern backlit display or emulator, the same transition can look much brighter and harsher.

Really fun take on the theme. Making the whole game a cursed coin pusher is very original, and I liked how the curses changed things up.

The palette looks great, the pirate music fits perfectly, and the sound effects have a lot of personality. Very charming entry.

Short and sweet, but I really liked the idea of treating old memories and family history as the “Old Gold.”

The house perspective is neat, and it’s especially cool that this is running as an actual Game Boy game. Cute story with a nice theme.

This was a very interesting concept with an eerie vibe. I liked the high contrast of the yellow light, it drew your eye around screen. Sound design was great and pushed the creepiness.

Switching between piloting the ship and running around defending it from aliens made for good immersion.

I liked being able to order the crew around. Glad I found this one, it was cool.

I'm impressed how much game you packed into 10 days. The Zelda influence is great and the different tools and areas give it a lot to explore.

I especially liked the bow puzzles and the art. There’s a ton here for a jam game. Great work!

The red on teal really popped, especially in the sword animation. Having that big wash of red cut across the screen made every hit feel brutal.

The exploring and combat are a good start. It's unfinished, but the mood is really good. I’d be interested to see where you take it after the jam. Giving you a follow and adding it to my inpso collection. Would love if you could review my game too!

The GBJAM scroll reminded me of the Nintendo logo when you boot up a Game Boy, and the music and text sounds felt very of the era. It was an immediate nostalgia kick. Top points for Game Boy Soul.

The graphics are great, cutscenes and gameplay. I found the game soothing and had a lot of tactical depth. If I could get this running on an actual Gameboy I would play this to wind down at the end of a day. (and probably stay up later than I should with a one more turn situation). Really awesome entry, and I think it deserves a lot more attention and reviews than it's had so far. If it was hosted in browser I think there'd be a lot of engagement with it.

awesome! I’m following you guys! Looking forward to seeing more.

It really just came out of a joke about making a Snake game based on our greedy cat. Kota is our nickname for him, and the mice were added because the poop started cluttering the board while you waited for it to turn gold.

It definitely got way more out of pocket by the end than when the jam started lol.

Nice Lights Out style puzzle. The warm gold-on-black palette works well, and it gets challenging pretty fast.

Very clean and polished. Nice job!

Fun hand-drawn intro movie lol. I love watching all the tiny goblins running around, and the little animations read really well at that size.

It’s simple, but very addictive. I kept wanting to buy just one more upgrade.

Cute art, and the sprites have a ton of Game Boy soul.

I liked the idea of everything moving when you move. Also glad to see GB Studio getting more love. I started subscribing to their magazine last month. It's a great community.

Had a lot of fun with this! I've downloaded the rom to play on my game boy flash cart!

Fun upgrade loop. The worm faces are made me lol. The art and writing are hilarious too.

Great work from the team! Yas Chud.

Really loved the torch colours shifting in the light. It gave the ruins a ton of atmosphere and communicated the count down timer well visually.

Very polished, very Game Boy Soul, and a really nice interpretation of the theme.

Really stylish entry. Swapping between human and cat form changes how you approach the platforming.

The art and music are excellent too, especially the little cat noises worked into the soundtrack. The tutorial also does a great job teaching everything without stopping to explain it. Really impressive for a first full project!

The sonar mechanic is fun. The art and audio work together really well too, especially the palette changes helped sell the sonar too.

Very impressive for a first jam!

Thank you for sharing this! It’s great to see the earlier iterations. The work paid off  :)

Really addictive little mining game. Sending the mole guys out while you drill deeper adds a fun management layer, and I liked how the palette changes as you descend.

It also really nails the Game Boy look and feel. Great work team!

Funny take on the theme. WarioWare with old people competing in bizarre Olympics lol.

The minigames have a lot of variety, the art is super charming, and the sound design is great. I especially liked how each event had its own little joke or gimmick.

Really fun, really silly, and one of the more memorable entries in the jam.

Okay, one hundred percent this is a Game Boy game. Top points for soul. I would have spent hours on this as a kid.

Love the attention to detail, especially the little “BOP” text when you knock blocks away. The sound design is great and everything communicates really clearly.

I wasn’t sure what the oil did when it showed up in stage 5, but after dying while trying to reach the gold I realized it must refill the drill gauge. I liked that the game let me figure things out naturally instead of stopping to explain everything.

The puzzle mechanics are fun, and new elements are introduced in a way that makes learning everything feel natural. Really professional entry that feels like it considered every part of the jam. Nice!

Really clever puzzle game. The coin stacking mechanic is great, and the puzzles build on it nicely.

The different tile heights added nice variation.

The story also gave the whole thing a surprisingly touching ending. Really nice work!

Really liked the grid-based sailing. Turning the ship and lining up cannon shots made the movement feel like its own little puzzle.

The clouds dispersing as you explore was such a nice touch too, and the art, music, and VFX give the whole thing a lot of atmosphere.

Short and sweet, but really memorable. Would definitely play more of this.

Thanks for the feedback. The scene fades come from GB Studio and are meant to mimic how transitions work on original Game Boy hardware. On the original LCD, those pixels simply fade back to the screen’s natural background, so the effect is much softer than the bright flash you can get on a modern backlit display.

I appreciate you pointing it out though, and I’m glad you liked the music!
