I hope there are some good Gamemaker Leaderboards system out there. These things are really handy since you have all the necessary functions ready on the server and just have to link it to your game. Leaderboards always add that little friendly competition that is always welcome! 🤣
Performance has always been quite the issue for me, on all my last games there were always lag spikes and black screens for some people. I hate that but fortunately most of the times people can still play because of the two different versions 😮💨
As for shaders, all the ones I used in my games are screenspace shaders, fragment shaders are indeed more performant, since they operate during the rendering process instead of applying a filter afterwards, but it also means you'll have to learn GLSL (and this thing scares me honestly). I don't really remember how shaders work in GMS but I believe it shouldn't be too different. 🤔
