ttRPG JAMuary community · Created a new topic Playtesters

Hello everyone! I hope your games are all going along smoothly! I wanted to make this topic, dedicated to playtesting our individual games, in case anyone was looking for playtesters to try out the game before finalizing any rules. I, myself, am in the scope for some playtesters, as I work on the Quickstart for my title. The game is a HZD x MH inspired title that uses various mechanics from the One Ring, Year Zero, and Reach of Titans. If anyone is interesting in helping me playtest (or if you have a game you would like me and others to help playtest, even more excitingly!), feel free to post in this topic! I'd love to help others with their projects and collaborate amongst each other!

Just wanted to make a comment saying I'm super excited with what you're going to be doing with this! I'm thinking I'll have to play it with my family - they are less into the violence and combat and more into the exploration, so I think this will be just perfect!

Well, initially I thought I was going to be utilizing Year Zero... to put it frank, I don't think its working very well. Not for the kind of action needed in games like Horizon Zero Dawn or Monster Hunter. So that's been quite frustrating. So now I'm using a modified version of the dice mechanic seen in The One Ring! For each roll, you roll a d10 + a number of d6s equal to your Skill, comparing to a Target Number associated with a Method - Forceful, Analytical, or Empathy. The d10 is also used to determine criticals and the like! In Combat, you have a pool of Endurance Dice, typically 7, which you spend and roll to perform various actions. They, effectively, replace your Skill Dice during Combat. So, you can perform 7 weaker actions, each rolling one dice each, or one mega-powerful action using all seven dice or, of course, something in-between. These Endurance Dice will also act as your Health - as you take damage, you will have less Endurance Dice. In playtest, this seems to really empower the characters. Since they know their TNs - Forceful, Analytical, and Empathy, they have a basis to guesstimate how many dice they need for an action, so when they fail, they don't feel cheated by the dice. They just remember to put in more dice for next time!

In light of the coming new year, I wanted to create a topic about our various ideas for our games, what systems we are using to fuel them, and the like! I, myself, am using a modified version of the LUMEN system mixed with the Year Zero Engine in order to  create a Horizon Zero Dawn x Monster Hunter TTRPG, since I've been wanting to play in a Horizon Zero Dawn-style campaign for a while now!

I want to ask, since this is my first Game Jam and the first time my work will be publicly available, is it acceptable if I begin working before the first of the year?
