Hi, I’m Chris. I’ve been building a small 2D platformer called Besedni Tatič where you learn Slovene through gameplay.

You explore locations inspired by Slovenia and pick up words through NPCs and mini challenges.

It’s still very early, but playable here:

I’m mainly looking for feedback on:

  • Gameplay feel (movement, jumping, pacing)
  • How the word-learning mechanics feel
  • UI clarity when collecting words
  • Should needing to note down words learn be clearer
  • Is the ski mini game fun?
  • Is the rafting mini game fun?

Any thoughts or quick impressions would really help.

Sorry I have attached the screenshots now.

I’ve been building my first game, The Basedni Tatic, and I’d like some feedback.

It’s a 2D platformer where you learn a new language through gameplay rather than traditional study. Instead of vocabulary lists or quizzes, the game teaches through exploration, dialogue, and interaction with the world.

You play as a “word thief” moving through different regions inspired by real locations. Each level introduces new words naturally through NPC conversations, environmental clues, and small gameplay challenges. The goal is to recognise and understand words through context, not memorisation.

Current features:

  • Side-scrolling platformer mechanics (jumping, exploration, light puzzles)
  • NPC dialogue that introduces vocabulary organically
  • Early language-learning system focused on recognition
  • Unique setting inspired by real-world locations
  • Boss encounters tied into the story and progression

This is an early version, so I’m mainly looking for feedback on:

  • Gameplay feel
  • Whether the language learning feels natural
  • Level design and pacing
  • General first impressions

If you try it, let me know what works and what doesn’t. I’m especially interested in whether the learning aspect actually feels intuitive.

Fun and informative! :) I am also doing educational platformer appreciate if you check it out.

Early beta stage of my language learning game for gamers who want to learn Slovene through unconventional methods.
