Posted Concurrent to my itch page; a J-horror novella, thirteen chapters, novella-length. EPUB / PDF.
The premise is screen-mediated horror. The protagonist is a late-night VTuber whose rig is on, whose chat is on, whose bathroom mirror is also on. Every surface is a screen. Every screen is a viewport. Every viewport is somewhere a thing can be.
What I wanted to do with the premise was set the protagonist’s debug stack against the wrong target. She has a five-check workflow she runs on her VODs every night, codec, driver, render queue, scope, phone-independent capture. The stack is competent. It’s also looking in the wrong place. The book is thirteen chapters of competence misfiring against a category it wasn’t built for.
The other thing the book runs is a parasocial axis, there’s a green dot in the chat-sidebar beside one handle that means more than it should mean. Horror infrastructure and intimacy infrastructure are the same infrastructure. That’s what I was actually writing about.
Working on the next novel (Wolves and Lilies, slow-burn romance) and a horror RPG (Where the Light Doesn’t Reach) next.
