The Doom 2-exclusivity was actually a disclaimer I forgot to add to the Itch post; due to the WAD structure, filtering by game wasn't supported in the original version. That said, there'll be an update soon that swaps to a .pk3 that supports filtering, so it'll be lots more compatible.

My personal recommendations would be Doom 2 the Way id Did and No Rest for the Living, alongside Revolution!.

Those are just my picks though, it should slot well with most mapsets centered around vanilla balance.

I've tossed together a possible solution, here's a quick test update that may or may not remedy the frame loss. It adds a new option for "fast" lasers with downgraded particles; let me know if this treats the issue. If so, I'll push it as a proper patch. If not, I'll continue tinkering.

The option is under "Visual Options" in this version.

Appreciate the kind words! Is this with v1.1.1? I nerfed their rockets heavily in v1.1; if their turn rate is still too high, I'll be issuing another small nerf in the next patch.

In the current version, unfortunately not; I plan to look into a possible solution, e.g. a 'performance toggle' that downgrades its particles. Is it a constant FPS drop while firing, or just when doing specific things like killing enemies?

Sorry for the late reply! "Partial" just applies to what it replaces; it replaces everything that has a Doom analogue, like weapons, but there's still a chunk of things (i.e., the artifacts and enemies) that are left as-is. As far as we know, there's no breakage, it should function unless something was missed in testing.
