The production here is dense in a way that creates such a dreamy vibe! I'm a sucker for dense mixes haha. Very sweet and pretty instrumentation and choice of effects. I agree that the mood and tone of the track reflect the theme quite nicely! Great job!

This soundtrack is so realistic! As someone who is still mora familiar with producing tracks that have more of a "song-y" structure and feel, it's very cool observing the stylistic differences between yours and our entries! I also enjoyed listening for differences in both of your production styles. The impression is that of a really strong teamup! I'm excited to hear what comes out of any future collaborations :^]
Really dig the abrasive electronic vibe. The soundtrack frames your narrative very vividly and definitely conveys a future-past type of story. Love that you also went for ringtone-type samples, adds a neat sense of urgency. From a production standpoint, I would have maybe liked to be able to hear individual sounds and ideas more distinctly, especially the more musical elements such as the string synth in time clash. Overall very solid and thorough entry!
Thank you! Since we’re most comfortable using modern production techniques, we incorporated lots of effects that give certain instruments a more old-school “sampled” vibe. Sharing midi clips and vst synth presets throughout our process was very useful for exploring different ideas while keeping the overall sound consistent enough to tell a story!
This was really great!! I loved all the cool sounds and textures but what I loved the most was the random/unpredictable nature of the experience. I'm very curious about how you put these pieces together - are the sections and changes programmed in advance or triggered off camera? Or rather still, is it all purely determined by the whims of the machines?? I love the concept for the video game but I actually found myself struggling to fit it with the music, but that is maybe just because I personally didn't find it very scary or disturbing. In general though, the track reminds me very vividly of what it's like to have insomnia so you're definitely getting the vibes very right. Great artistry!
The aspect of this soundtrack that I felt the most impact and enjoyment from is how effectively you convey tone and emotion despite a sparse and rudimentary approach to composition. Very solid cohesion and very cool and tasteful game concept. I don't really feel the need to express too much of my opinion otherwise, since this type of music/production is pretty removed from what I typically make and listen to.
I was very excited when I saw this submission, as LOTR has been a pretty big way that me and my sister have connected over the years. I have fond memories of reciting Tolkien's poetry to each other and remember being very excited to hear some of our favorite ones realized as full songs when the first Hobbit movie came out. I was immediately struck by how immersive the track is. The panning and recording technique make for such an intimate listening experience that I feel as if I'm there sitting at a long table in a great hall and singing along. I really enjoy how personal and genuine this submission feels :)
I'ts my partner's cat Manti! Thank you so much for sharing how you interpreted the piece in such a visually creative way! The explosion is actually some kick and snare samples getting obliterated by my SoundToys Decapitator VST and then going through the airiest reverb known to man haha. Super glad it fits in with the rest!
I love and definitely hear the work you put into developing a narrative. There's either a reverb or pad throughout that sounds a pretty convolved when it comes in with the guitar strums. I actually find it very ambiguous and haunting cause it contrasts the piano part in a very neat and subtle way. If that wasn't really the goal though then I think that notching out some low-mids and reducing the decay a bit might add a lot of space for individual notes to ring out distinctly. Very pretty chords, melodies and musical changes make this a very easily enjoyable song!
I would be so enchanted to hear this start playing as I begin a new journey of self-discovery. The repeating melody genuinely becomes a bit heart wrenching towards the end, longing for a time where it felt new and hopeful. I'm inclined to point out ways in which you could have painted even more vivid a scene with more instruments and soundscapes; but I think that as a video game soundtrack, this song might already be as complex as it needs to be. Very impressive and evocative submission!
What you said about the glitchiness tugging at your ear is very thought provoking! I agree and it's making me thing I can still experiment with the idea much further in future work! I'm very happy you also found it cohesive! I tried very hard to make it so but I'm never quite sure after hearing it over and over lol
I love how you put it with the explosions! They absolutely do feel like punctuation throughout! I'm really glad to hear that the nostalgic vibes are getting through as well! I've been wondering how to be more intentional about creating that emotion lately and the use of harmonies definitely sounds like a big piece of the puzzle! The section that starts at 1:09 is actually the first part that I came up with lol and I kind of struggled at first to expand off of it. Still my favorite part too!
Thank you! Supporting the "bad connection" was exactly what I was going for with the bass and drums! The way you count it is definitely the way to count the drum part but I mostly count it as "dum pa dum pa dum dum pa dum pa" lol. I tried using the semi-open hihat hits and ghost notes to "hide" the switchup in the middle of the bar and I find that it works really well! The reverse piano part that comes in at the last section is actually counted as 3+3+3 which I find gives it a lot of energy!
There's a lot for me to appreciate and enjoy in this submission. I really really love the sounds used both synths and drums. Do you use a specific soundfont or VST? I've been wanting to incorporate these types of old-school hardware sounds in my music and I don't really know where to get started. Really great cohesiveness between tracks and great vibes throughout!
I love the focus on percussion here! The 808 is very well chosen imo and really keeps the different sections tied together. The variations you use feel almost appropriate in the context of the the whole track. I think the elements in this piece work to make it unquestionably stands out as being unique and having a very developed sense of identity. The composition definitely paints a very vivid portrait in my mind which makes its enjoyment surprisingly effortless. Very inspiring track!
This entry stands out in a very cool way and I especially appreciate the visuals of you playing with settings to go along with the soundscape. Your storytelling seems to play such a significant role in the appreciation of this piece, which has me wondering if it could be even more explicitly integrated into the track using also very processed voice-over audio. I feel very inspired after watching to try and start using my guitar pedals for this type of production/application as well!
I feel very inspired listening to this track. The way you use noise for the drum hits is something I've been meaning to try out for awhile because of how old sound chips often did the same. It sounds like you took care in writing an arrangement that still tell a cohesive story, with sections and changes that feel natural together. Really great work!
I'm always excited to hear this type of production in video game music. I've recently been enjoying trying to write trap beats because the bass/drum lines and synth leads are so fun and hypnotic to make and loop. Since minimalism and repetition is key for leaving space for vocals, I can definitely see this also working well in an OST to leave space for other aspects of the game.
I felt very similarly about this challenge before as well as during. I can definitely relate to struggling to derail my composition with certain types of changeups. The "rule breaking" sounded very much like decisions I would be making anyway while experimenting but my end result had me questioning how impactful the changeups I went with really were lol
