Not a request per se, I just animated a couple more details and was hoping to get your feedback.

I suppose I can put a pre-release ROM on GitHub for you.

Thank you. subpixel carefully designed the animation to make the transition to code relatively easy.

I believe it is possible to add an assembly plugin to a GBS project. In any case, all the assets are there, so remaking it with GBS is also an option (albeit not a straightforward one).

Yes! You clearly knew what you were doing when you created this animation.

May I bother you with a couple of additions? How can I contact you privately?

I loved subpixel’s animation, so I turned it into an actual Game Boy ROM.

This project turned out to be much harder than anticipated. I probably should have used GB Studio, but I’d grown accustomed to doing everything in assembly.

Any chances of including this in the jam’s cart? I published the code under MIT and left more than 64 tiles for the window as requested ;)

Published!

Waddaya mean just jamming?

I just finished it and uploaded for your final approval. I’m especially doubtful about the right-hand chain and the stereo channel split, but I’m pretty happy with the X-flip.

P.S. Is he holding a skull?

Yes, it’s unfinished. I just wanted you to see it before I’m done.

I’d love to see this become a part of the jam’s official ROM, but I’m afraid the organisers won’t be happy to accept since it wasn’t developed in GB Studio (I’ve grown too accustomed to RGBDS).

Oh I’m definitely anti-war. The problem in this conflict is as soon as this side lays down its arms it will cease to exist.

Yes, the cat is a very nice touch. The eyes, on the other hand, are 9 pixels wide. Not a huge problem, but took me a while to catch.

I just added you as admin on the WIP ROM. Please let me know if you got the link.

I wanna play this game!

This should definitely be the ROM’s soundtrack!

Why aren’t those meanders meandering? ;) Love it!

Right. I thought you were referring to the animation complexity.

In the meantime, I started converting the GIF into a GB ROM and found out it’s not as easy as I’d imagined. You have the independently moving scales, which are exactly ten tiles wide. That means that if I want to render those as sprites, the cat has to be background.

Regardless, I’d love to see your imaginary game become a reality!

So much great art!

I had had a general idea regarding what the topic of my cartoon would be. Once I saw the theme, it all clicked almost immediately.

I don’t consider myself an artist, and my submission will probably get labeled as “inciting adversarial responses”, which I think is insane, but I guess that’s the world we’re living in.

As for OP’s doubts regarding their art, the DMG is definitely capable of doing this (and much more!). I don’t want to shamelessly promote my work, but a certain demo I had published recently (still WIP) is proof to that.

Excellent question. Models prior to GBC indeed didn’t have this ability.

Since this year’s jam is 1-bit, my guess would be GBC isn’t supported, but let’s wait for the organisers to confirm this.

Nope, pure SM83 assembly.

Thanks for trying it out!

Could you be more specific? Are you referring to the title animations? What was the device/model?

Is that a GB Studio issue?

Why not use the STAT interrupt to switch between the VRAM blocks so you can have all 384 tiles available? If you need 64 tiles for your popup (why that many BTW?), that would still leave 320 for our image.

I do intend to make at least one fully playable level. Probably will publish it at the end of the rating period.

Although nothing captures the Game Boy Soul better than a GB ROM, you probably should have forced the background’s palette on the sprites, since GBC renders those using three additional colours.

You wanna jump? You need to pay for the game first! :-P

I didn’t have the time to implement jumping, sorry :’(

The iframe is too small for the game’s dimensions; doesn’t work in my browser.

Thank you for your interest.

The game was developed for the Game Boy Competition 2025. Unfortunately, we were unable to submit it in a playable state before the due date (but are planning on finishing it soon!).

Re: game’s goal, you are probably familiar with Bejeweled and/or Candy Crush. They took the original author’s idea, but failed to credit him properly. We just did our humble part in righting that wrong.

As for hexagonal match-3, that concept isn’t new either, but at least we arrived at the idea independently.

I was actually considering doing the same for this compo. Good job!

This looks very promising. You clearly know your Epic well!

A very interesting take on Korobeiniki! ;)
