thanks !

the current levels do not explore the full potential of this mechanic for sure ! and yeah, the last level is a bit lackluster: the second pressure plate is in fact not useful at all to solve it. I wish we'd had more time to tweak the current levels, and maybe add a few of them

we are probably going to explore it a bit more because we have quite a few ideas for the game

We had a lot of fun creating the main menu ! It was very much a team effort: I sketched it; Ohhnyx made it; I coarse polished it; and then he polished it until smooth and reflective !

the concept and the art are very fun and silly. and it's quite satisfying to wreak havoc in those cat's kitchen :D

I've had a hard time seeing what were the exact consequences of my actions on the cat chef's loops. though that's probably due to the fact that fullscreen on unity web games seem to not work for me this year, for some unknown reason.

mmh, when launching the game I did not look at the level select screen and immediately selected the first level. so I actually did not see it existed ^^'

though now that I played it, I can say that the experiment was a great success ! :D

A very satisfying game !

The concept is neat ! There's a bit of time to get the hang of the controls, but when you've learned it, the game's fun :)

And hey, if you failed your planet throw, at least you can spam the star system with asteroids as a consolation prize.

This is a cool way to interpret this year's theme ! Plus this feels fun to interract with.

(PS: Might have gotten nerd snipped :)

This game is incredible ! The puzzles are fun and interesting, and they don't feel overwhelming as the mechanics are well introduced. Played it till the last level :)

This is a really nice concept paired with a great execution, nice job !

Yes it is !

I announced it on the community tab of the jam when it was done.

Here is the link to the itch page: https://khusheete.itch.io/the-pixel-scene-jam-scene.

(1 edit)

Alright ! It's been quite a while ! I've not had much time to work on the scene's jam (because life).

But the scene image is complete ! I've moved some things around and added the last few sprites in the scene.

Here is the itch page where it is available: https://khusheete.itch.io/the-pixel-scene-jam-scene

Hi !

It's been a week since the jam ended, and there is still no scene image.. But I've been hard at work creating it !

There has been a lot of sprites submitted to the jam, a lot more than I thought there would be, which is awsome ! However, it is taking way longer than expected to create a scene including everything.

I have completed the first pass on the scene: the broad shape of the scene is finished. I still need to add polish to the scene, and some assets have not been added yet.

You can see the current status of the scene on this page: https://khusheete.itch.io/the-pixel-scene-jam-scene

If you have some feedback on the scene feel free to share it, I'd be really happy to hear it :)

When it's finished !

It's been taking waaay longer than I thought to create the scene because there's A LOT of assets to put together.

Hi !

I'm still in the process of making the scene :)

Y'all have made a lot of asset, and that's awsome ! But it's taking quite a long time to create a scene with everything (:

As of right now, the scene image grew to about 1700x1100 pixels (yeah, for a pixel art scene !!). I'm almost done with the general shape. I'll start polishing it soon™️.

I'll post something in the jam's community tab and on bluesky (@khusheete.bsky.social - not much to see here) when the scene's finished.

Edit: I'll post an update with an image of the scene I'll have before starting work on polish. To show what I've been working towards with everyone's sprites.

Hi !

I cannot access your submission, here is the message I get when trying to access your submission page:

"You do not have access to this page

Did you set your page visibility to public ?

The jam is now finished !

Over the next few days, I'll work on the scene to put every in asset made during the jam. I'll post an update here once it is finished :)

Thanks for everyone for participating !

👍

Yea, if no one had created some floor, I'd have made one. It's soo important to have one for the image to feel cohesive. I let the floor (and wall) be transparent so people don't think that there's already one.

And btw, thanks for your floor and walls, I do think they add a lot to the scene :D

Someone else told me they wanted to create some floor for the café, so there's gonna (at least) two sets :)

Hi !

I've been thinking quite a bit about floors (And telling myself that floors aren't meant to be customers. But that's beside the point). You asked for your floor tiles to cover only a portion of the floor real estate, and I'm currently wondering where it should go.

I still tried to tile the whole floor with your floor tiles just to see what would happen.

Here it is:

I don't think that it is too repetitive. Though it is a bit too noisy to fill the whole floor (which is fine since it's not it's goal :). This makes it hard to discern shapes that are placed on top (at least for me).

It's not actually an issue for interior floors to repeat: they usually have a motif irl. And besides, having some sort of distinguishable repeating pattern may help with image readability.

Anyways, I think I found it a job as the counter's floor:

Imo it fits quite well here. In addition, the floor transition is not to hard to create and is quite natural.
What do you think ? Is your floor happy here ? Should I place it somewhere else ?

Thanks for your submission !

I placed your table in the cosy corner of the café. I really like the idea that it may be both a table in the café and some sort of customer (as it is drinking some beverage and it is hanging out with people).

*Receiving wall sprites*

*Fighting the urge to place walls as customers*

*Some time later...*

And the café now has walls !! :)

They really ground the scene well I think. It looks much better with them.

Hey ! Thanks for your submission, and congrats for your first sprites :D

I added them to the scene. (I'll rework table placements when I get more sprites from others to see where exactly to place things.)

Heya ! Thanks !

I added your drarves to the scene and gave them something to eat/drink :)

Hi ! Thanks :)

I added your sprites to the scene. The ninja servers are hard at work making the café work. I sprinkled your food items around and gave some utensils to customers (yea, there's not many customers yet).

I saw that you included an empty plate, so I made a plate stack out of it. Thought it made sense to have somewhere in the café.

Thanks to you, part of the floor is now made out of floor !

As per your request, the customers are not made out of floor. This was hard to archive, as it is quite unusual in such an establishment you see. However I gave it my best shot, and I do think I managed to do it properly. What do you think ? (:

Hi !

Your painting is now firmly placed on the (non existant) wall, the red head guy is ready to eat @ikana's huge ice cream, and the vase is currently sitting on a counter. Thanks for your submission :)

(1 edit)

Heya !

Thanks for your submission ! It looks super good :) I added it to the scene 👍

About the two counters.. It's pretty much expected ! About 60 people joined the jam, so there's bound to be overlap. My job as jam host is to find a way to make the few dozen incomming counters fit in the scene, somehow ;)

Hey ! That's nice !

I added it to the scene image (created the scene's page as well :)

Hey !

I'd try mutliple things:

  • Maybe break up the full lines that represent the planks, and let people's imagination fill in the gaps.

Here are some examples of it used on sprites:

On the table, the planks are somewhat implied, and on the fireplace, the rocks on the side are.

The idea is that the brain is really good at connecting dots, so you can levrage that and not draw everything. you just need enough for the brain to understaind what's happening. That's usually good to use when there's a reapeating pattern but drawing it all adds too much noise to the image (I think that there's a bit of that here).

(It takes a long time to have something look good with this technique, and it usually look quite messy at first.)

  • Maybe use the darker / lighter shading colors to draw the plank edges. This goes a bit with the previous tip, it may help to imply the planks and remove noise (I'm doing that quite a bit with the fireplace).
  • If you wanna try other colors, try to add the darker shade of purple as well. There is way less contrast between the dark brown and dark purple colors in this palette:

On the same note, you could try to use lighter colors, because there's less contrast between ligher colors (and as such, you can have more color variations).

You could also try to use (blue + green + purple) colors or combinations of those for the wood instead of brown + purple. It would go more in the "fantasy wood" your talking about, but maybe it'd look good (?).

There is probably much more you could try :) But that's what I can think of rn.

you said you finished the barista sprite ? so should I place it in the scene now ?

hey !

32x32 is fine :)

sprites made for this jam are not meant to be in a game, so there's no need to normalize sprite sizes for "math for placement in game" reasons. so any sprite size that fits the actual drawing is a good sprite size for this jam (in the end I'll still place sprites by hand in the scene using my pixel art editor)

I'll be buisy at the exact time the jam starts. So I'm revealing the theme and palette a bit early !

The theme won the vote by a landslide, so giving more time would not have changed anything anyways ;)

✨ Let the jam start now !! ✨

Here is a topic where I can do some announcements about the jam.

(2 edits)

Hi everyone !

In this thread, you can ask for your submissions to be included in the scene throughout the jam. The scene image will be put together during the jam, and I'll periodically post the in-progress on my submission page (link: https://khusheete.itch.io/the-pixel-scene-jam-scene)

When you finished drawing a sprite, you can come here and ask for it to be included in the scene. To do so post a reply with a link to your submission page and tell me which sprite to include (because you may have multiple sprites). You may also ask for the sprite to be somewhere specific on the in-progress scene (and I'll do my best to fullfill those requests if possible).

Everyone will draw objects/props/people/bits of the scene and I'll put them together. So at first it will be like the second option: there's mostly nothing to go off of.

However, I'll periodically post the in-progress scene image on my own submission page (I'll provide a few hours after the jam starts, when I start to put together sprites). So as the jam progresses, the scene will become more defined (and it will tend towards the first option you talked about). This is why I want people to submit their sprites as soon as possible :)

Thanks for asking about this. Maybe it's a point I should clarify, as it is soo important to the jam.

Hi !

I'll give some guidelines for the art style at the start of the jam to keep the scene somewhat coherent. There's not going to be any hard rule about style however (except for the color palette that is). I want to let people explore different styles. And yes, I fully expect the scene to be a bit chaotic as a result.

About the themes. They're meant to be vague (though I do get how they are arguably too vague). People will go off in different directions. But I still think that the resulting scene will be interesting.

Here would be my answers to your questions based on my own interpretation of those themes (any other interpretation is as valid as mine ofc):

  • Cyber Easter can absolutly be easter in a cyberpunk world. I've also though about it as being a digital easter or a web easter. Elements from all theses ideas (and maybe more) will probably appear in the final scene.
  • 17 Gramophone alley is a fictional address. A gramophone or phonograph is a device that was used to playback sounds from a disk record (see Wikipedia). The question now is: what's in this alley ?
  • <<"the"? dreamland?>> It's not a well defined place. It's a world where dreams are. Whatever that means to you and to other artists.
  • <<Luxurious Cavern? Like fancy modern style bat cave? or crystal caves?>> Why not both ? If people draw elements from both ideas, they'll be combined into the one scene.

Really cool game, concept, and art ! The animations are sick, and the tiny dogbot is really cute :).
Like the others, I'd love to play a more polished version !

Thanks ! Yep, that's the end, we didn't have time to implement anything more than a black screen.

Thanks !

I do agree about the items. We actually had that feature at some point in developpement. However, the last few hours of the jam were quite frantic as we had to put everything together, and we broke it :(. Welp, that happens sometimes. We are planning to update the game once the voting is over (with the items back, and add some stuff and polish here and there).

Got a 3935 as new high score :)

Ooohh ! Wasn't aware of the restart button ^^'. Thankfully I didn't - really - need it !

It was the level at 4:00 in the video, probably the one where being stuck between two doors is intentional !

Yea, I feel like with the mannequin becoming solid only when it's recorded part ends, it is impossible not to have clipping issues.. However, I was surprised at how difficult it was to clip through the ceiling, and couldn't figure out a way to clip through walls. You did a nice job with that !
