The game cannot be uploaded to Steam, due to its reliance on AI art.
So for me, releasing it for free on itchio was the option that made the most sense. I do have an exe version I give out on the discord for people that want a local copy, but generally, I plan to leave it here and playable in browser for as long as I am able.

I believe this may be caused by an adblocker or some other software that is preventing the game from running properly. I have been unable to reproduce this in the offline version of the game, and when it happens online people have mentioned that their browser console is spamming messages about elements being blocked.
I can get anyone with this problem an .exe version of the game, just follow the discord link in the main menu/settings menu.
I appreciate it! If you know anyone else who likes mysteries, please pass it along!
All of the spouses do have a way to find them without needing to resort to guess work, though they're the most "out of the box" puzzles in the game, to be fair.
If you have any question about how you were supposed to come across someone or any questions about the game at all, the discord can help.
I do appreciate your donation, thank you. As for continuing in the future right now there are no solid plans. This wasn't supposed to even be the scope that it turned out and I do have a full time job to contend with, so I don't have any immediate plans. I do have some puzzle-game-adjacent stuff I've thought about but its a long ways away from becoming a reality.
Thank you for looking more into this! If you can find a way to contact me privately, on twitter here:

Or on reddit here:

I can send you an exe version of the game that should hopefully work even on an old laptop.
No need to donate (I mean it), this game is free on purpose due to its usage of AI art.
(If you are really insistent on donating however, there is a support link that itchio puts below the game window.)
As for the alternate picture, I'd prefer you edit your post if possible to remove their names. One of the people you mentioned, you can think of as a "notable" Roottree, except they were notable before the internet existed. So maybe they could be mentioned somewhere less digital.
You can message me through reddit here: https://www.reddit.com/user/Superrodan
Or you can just reply to this post and I'll DM you there:

You can try but its the same file. Is this a windows computer? If so I can get you an exe version of the game. But I'm not comfortable posting it here or a link to the discord here. Is there any other way you could get in touch with me where DMs exist?
Either via twitter or reddit? I can post a link to my twitter or reddit here if you'd like.
If you come to the discord there are people that can give you hints for your direct situation.
The game can be completed in a wide variety of orders, so knowing you are at 18/33 doesn't really help me know where you're stuck (And as far as I can tell there is unfortunately no good way to put spoiler tags in itcho posts like this)
Sometime yesterday, itchio moved all of their HTML games from one internal server to another internal server, which means the location the game was saving to no longer existed.

The issue is not something I can help you resolve. However if you come to the discord server, I can get you set up with an exe build of the game that has an approximation to the progress you made.
I legitimately don't think I opened the edit window on the game at all. At one point I contemplated changing the colors of the page's background but canceled out without saving. I don't think that was on the day it claims it was edited though, I think it was a few days before.
This is why I'm worried, I cant think of anything I could have done to make the game thing I updated it. I do not use butler at all.
Hey all,
I released a game called The Roottrees are Dead a little over a week ago. Today, someone came into the discord and mentioned they thought an update broke their save file, but I mentioned that I did not update the game. They pointed out that beneath my game, on its page, it says it was "Updated 1 day ago". I'm not sure where that's coming from. Is there any way to see an update history as the game's developer?

If you go here, below the place you can play the game there is a dropdown for "more information" This is what it shows:
(I have pasted an image above but it might not be embedding properly. Here it is on imgur:)
Has anyone else had this happen to them even if they didn't update the game?
I'm really sorry to hear that. :(
The only thing that I know that can erase game is clearing cookies, as well as in very rare cases, some adblockers (I don't know why... the game has no ads of any kind in it and doesn't connect to a server)
If you are on Windows and willing to give it one more shot I can send you a version of the game that is an .exe instead of playable in browser. It will not have the same issue, as it will save locally.
Answers are checked automatically. Whenever you have three things right the game should automatically let you know and then tell you what you had right.
There is a bug with some adblockers I have run into where they occasionally freeze up the game and have it stop automatically checking for answers. There are no ads in the game, so I don't know what causes this, and its very, very rare (only two or three people out of everyone who has played the game has run into this)
Sure! Can you edit your post to maybe remove their names after you find it? Or delete the post and I'll delete this reply.
EDIT: I totally misread this at first and thought you were asking for the answer, not a hint. Hopefully you didn't see the first thing I wrote.
Here's more of a hint: One of the two people you mentioned was pretty high profile, but before the internet existed. You may have searched for them online, but did you check the more old-school resources?
