I had so much fun playing this! The minigames are so creative, and I could not stop laughing at the song choice for the dancing minigame. The humor in this game is on point and I cannot believe how good this game looks. I absolutely love the art direction, with the mixed media approach, especially at the end. I about lost it when the pngs of the real hands appeared.
The minigame structure was an absolute stroke of genius, and it made the game so replayable for me. I will say an option to replay certain minigames would be a great addition, but even as I say that I do really love playing them all back to back and trying to get a perfect run. My God of War muscle memory is definitely helping me at the end.
Although I can't give you five stars because in the coffin carrying minigame you cannot reach 69% durability ;).
But really though absolutely fantastic!!!
I absolutely love the ending moment. The contrast from the storybook art style(which is adorable by the way) to the quick switch back to pixel art was so well executed, and definitely came as a shock to me. From that beginning I could feel the dark undertones to a very cute exterior, and when that switch happened it was beautifully done. (Sorry for the vagueness trying to keep it spoiler free :) )
I even had this amazing moment at the end with the final action. It felt very Zelda-like, and the telegraphing of that moment from the beginning is amazing. In fact all the telegraphing was well-executed, and I never felt lost or like the game was holding my hand too much.
I am a hug fan of the pixel art, especially on Tim and Peep. As someone new to pixel art it was inspiring to see how well executed the character design is. It was all completely readable with very defined silhouettes. Not even to mention the shading and texture work. The 3 tone shading on Tim's hat was especially impressive, and I love how in the character art of Peep his fire is round and flowy.
As someone who also included a Top of the Morning easter egg, I loved the implementation. I really enjoyed that it cropped up as a dialogue choice.
There were a couple of small bugs, namely if you push the esc key at any point the music from the title screen will play over the rest of the audio continuously, and I had no way to exit out of the game once I was done so I just had to force close the application. Otherwise, it was pretty seamless.
An absolutely amazing little project, and would love to see where it goes!
Thanks for the feedback! How to exit the pigpen was a bit of a sticking point, since I didn't want people to leave before they'd triggered a story event. To do that, you have to click on the trough. Since you've played, do you have any thoughts on how we can make that more obvious, to keep others from getting stuck in the future?
