Rescuers2D — Post-Jam Update

One honest note about the original game-jam build: I know the controls could feel awkward and confusing, especially when switching between rescuers and learning how their abilities interact with the environment.

The controls have received an initial usability pass and already feel better, although they are not finished yet. I’m also developing clearer visual feedback, contextual prompts, and puzzle guidance so players can understand what each rescuer can do and how to approach obstacles without removing the challenge of solving them.

Major Post-Jam Improvements

Since the original release, Rescuers2D has received a substantial amount of rebuilding and polish:

  • Expanded the Main Menu with New Game, Password, Settings, and Quit options.
  • Added the foundation for password-based level progression.
  • Added persistent audio and graphics settings.
  • Rebuilt the audio system with scene-specific music, smoother transitions, mixer controls, and persistent playback.
  • Added considerably more character audio, including footsteps, climbing, crawling, actions, reactions, interactions, and ability sounds.
  • Improved UI navigation and audio feedback.
  • Improved scene loading and the persistent systems operating behind the game.
  • Expanded destructible terrain and environmental interaction feedback.
  • Completely reworked the Riot Officer’s C4 ability:
    • Charges now attach to nearby destructible terrain.
    • Placed C4 is removed from the shared inventory.
    • Multiple charges cannot be stacked in the same location.
    • Explosions damage destructible tiles and apply force to nearby objects.
    • Placement, fuse, explosion, smoke, and flash feedback have been improved.
  • Fixed several inventory-pickup and interaction issues.
  • Added more animation-event support for character movement and abilities.
  • Improved the Main Menu presentation and removed unintended player control from its decorative characters.
  • Completed numerous smaller stability fixes and behind-the-scenes improvements.

Still Coming

Rescuers2D remains an actively developing post-jam project. Upcoming work includes:

  • Clearer puzzle hints and interaction feedback.
  • A broader controls and quality-of-life pass.
  • Improved HUD, health, inventory, and timer systems.
  • A reworked completion screen.
  • Additional character abilities.
  • More environmental effects and bunker decoration.
  • Continued development of Level 2.
  • Further audio, animation, visual-effect, and accessibility improvements.

Thank you to everyone who played the original game-jam version. Your feedback is helping transform Rescuers2D from a rushed jam experiment into a more polished, readable, and expandable puzzle-platforming adventure.

Thanks for playing sorry about that controls section coming soon after i rework them a bit

I think its f, the entire controls are getting reworked this week and i have a new build coming soon with a second level better anims and more accurate vfx soon

This was fun I really love all the classics, and this was a fun little taste of the past. Maybe, jack down the difficulties on a few of them a bit?

This was a really enjoyable experience—thanks for sharing it. I especially liked the ambient rain, which created a relaxing atmosphere while playing. At the same time, the gameplay kept me engaged and gave a sense that there was always something needing attention, which balanced the calm tone nicely.

Good job

It might be interesting to see how that mechanic could be pushed further with scoring or additional hazards.

I had some difficulty understanding the control scheme at first, which made it challenging to fully engage with the experience. After getting a better grasp of it, I still managed to reach a state where I seemed to be unintentionally stuck.

That said, this really reminded me of Myst, which is a huge compliment—games like that played a big role in inspiring my own path into development. There’s something special here, and I’d love to see it refined further. Great work.

Its a fun game but my graphics card can not handle it.

Man I can see myself falling into this.

This was a fantastic experience. I loved the overall vibe—it really stands out. It’s one of those games that I can appreciate a lot, even if I’m not great at it, which speaks to how engaging it is.

This was a very charming game. I especially enjoyed the music, which complemented the experience nicely. It also gave me strong Mega Man vibes, which I always appreciate. I liked the decision to approach the classic side-scroller format as an upward-scrolling experience—it felt like a fresh twist on a familiar style.

This was a fun experience overall, though I did find parts of it a bit confusing. It wasn’t always clear when level transitions were happening or what the current state of the game was, which made it harder to stay oriented. That said, the chaotic moments added to the charm, and it definitely captured some strong Evel Knievel-style energy. Thanks for the experience.

Really fun game. I loved how quickly you can get up to speed and “get in the zone” with the movement and pacing. A scoreboard or additional level challenges could push the replayability even further, but as it stands, it’s already very engaging.

This was a fantastic entry. I found the death mechanic especially compelling, with the need to continually reposition in an increasingly limited space. That shrinking play area added a lot of tension and made it hard to put down.

This took a short second for me to figure out the controls but once I did this game has a GREAT feel to it. I'm reminded of classic Mario... who doesn't love that. I'll return to see if you have an awesome last level...

This is super fun. I had a tough time getting used to the controls but I really enjoyed it.

I'm sure this works but I got stuck on the first map? I was flying but couldn't go anywhere...! I love the audio and it sure pumped me up but please explain what im doing wrong haha...

This was pretty clever it reminds me of my little brothers haha. I'm not gonna lie it's pretty hard but def addictive. THE FLOOR IS LAVA!

I couldn't figure out how to get past the second platform?

LOL I Get it! took me a minute. Good job
