Previously a Steam exclusive, I am pleased to announce that Haunted: Attack of the Dead Men has been released on itch.io!  Download the demo here.

About

Haunted: Attack of the Dead Men is a game that takes place during the titular ‘Attack of the Dead Men’, where you take control of a soldier in the German army and fight against hordes of undead Russians, who have just survived a gas attack.  Fight your way through Osowiec Fortress to uncover the truth about why the Russians have started coming back from the dead, and put a stop to it before it is too late.

14 levels (+ a secret level) are planned for the full release, but enjoy the first 4 levels in the demo right now!

Bug reports and technical issues should be posted in the Bug Reports forum.

Feedback and suggestions should be posted in the Feedback forum.

This is necessary as I may not see your posts otherwise.

What is Haunted: Attack of the Dead Men about?

Haunted: Attack of the Dead Men is a game that takes place during the titular ‘Attack of the Dead Men’, where you take control of a soldier in the German army and fight against a number of undead Russians, who have just survived a gas attack.  You will also attempt to find out why all these Russians managed to survive.

‘The Attack of the Dead Men’?  What’s that about?

The Attack of the Dead Men was a real battle fought between Germany and Russia during World War One, at Osowiec Fortress.  You can learn more about the real battle on Wikipedia, as well as in the game’s own manual.

How authentic is the game compared to the real battle?

Not very.  It would be difficult to make a historically accurate game based on just the battle itself as it did not last very long (and mostly consisted of Germans running away for once!).

In the game, the Russians are depicted as zombies, which naturally they weren’t in the real battle.

When will the game be available?

This is difficult to answer concretely at the moment. Ten out of the planned fifteen levels have been finished, with two more having been started but not yet finished - content-wise, I would say the game is currently 70-80% complete (as of December 2023).

The store page lists a provisional release date of Q2 2024, so it will be a few more months yet - I revealed a more detailed breakdown of the roadmap in Development Update #13.

You keep saying ‘I’ a lot.  Why is that?

Because it really is just me.  GameBeast Productions is a one-man studio named after my Steam account (for lack of any better name).  I also work on this as just a hobby and not as a full time job - so rest assured, there are no potential financial issues that would lead to this game getting cancelled.

I’ve finished the demo.  Now what?

Unfortunately, there isn’t much else I can offer just yet.  However, if you follow the game, you can be notified whenever I post a development update - I will try to do one every month.

What engine is the game built with?

Godot 4.1.

Will there be support for MacOS X?

Not at the moment.  While the engine supports MacOS X out-of-the-box, and I can very easily produce a Mac build, the problem I have is that I don’t have access to any Apple device to test it with.

When the full game is released, I may invest in one to revisit this, depending on demand.
