When you say fights are skipped, are you saying that you are being taken straight to the results screen? There should be a text-based adventure style description of the battle.
Not being able to use any cards after the first transition is weird — haven't hit that bug before.
Regarding stats, did you by chance read the in-game manual? It is found on the main menu under the "How to Play" button.
