We totally agree with you on the endless mode, and that's the direction we planned on heading into. (Because, as you say, right now endless mode is effectively 3 minutes).
Some kind of higher trade-off for picking up powers, and then some way to reduce the mutation again so it really is more about making your perfect build and seeing how fast and awesome you can become.
