Hey there, thank you for your purchase! I’ve endeavored to make the PDF/digital edition its own value-for-money; it includes essentially the same file that Lulu uses for printing, and a bunch of extras - as opposed to the Lulu version, which has a low markup for both sizes.
That being said: reach out to me on discord or Bluesky, and I can see what I can do!
This is a very, very big download, so I figured, for those curious, I’d write down a bit about what’s inside, following the primary folder structure. I by no means mean to disparage the effort that went into collecting this; I’m just trying to contextualize the utility for other people like me.
- Art: Various images. Not very big, not super useful.
- Battle Maps: A big selection of maps, sorted by theme. Quality/usability varies, but overall, likely to have something useful.
- Character Manager: Didn’t open this, separate zip with what I think is a Dark Heresy/Only War character sheet tool.
- Character Sheets: PDFs for Black Crusade.
- Fonts: Typefaces commonly used in 40k stuff.
- Gameplay Reference: Excel files containing weapons/equipment for the FFG games.
- Graphics: A big collection of various images. Some seem to be files used in programs, like HUD elements. The Ship Graphics list is cool/extensive. There’s also some useful templates for dataslates.
- Handouts: Various images that mostly serve as inspiration, as they seem to be made for specific adventures.
- Hive Maps: A few variations/big photoshop files of the same hive image; I think you can overlay your own images?
- Org Charts: A few charts that lay out the Imperium’s structures, which can definitely be useful.
- Planetary Maps: 2 examples on how to make sleek, relatively minimal hex maps for planets, and Photoshop/Paint.net templates.
- Props: Big collection of PNGs that can be used on maps. Pretty good quality, pretty big selection. Mostly assets from deZigner, as far as I can tell.
- Space Maps: Various sector/space maps
- Tokens: Big variation of tokens, for every faction imaginable. Top-down, circle-stamped, and deZigner.
- World Maps: Example of how to make a planet map (single image)
A discount for the print version? I’m currently not planning on it.
The markup on the print version is already quite low. Printing is, simply put, not very cheap in this day and age.
The PDF (on Itch) can also be printed by anyone who wants to, and includes the additional bonuses/digital tools and such I’ve released over the years, so I feel like that’s fair value. Anyone who purchased an earlier edition/version automatically has full access to the current full release PDF.
I’m awaiting my test copies from Lulu - if those are good, I’ll open the PoD!
Since both use Cairn as the template, the overall compatibility is quite high! You can check out the SRD for edition 1.32 for a general idea of the contents :)
Thank you for the extensive review!
I like "showing my work", so it was definitely a goal to give a lot of inspiration on how to run an ambush, besides giving the means to run this particular ambush. I don't have quite enough there to release it as a separate framework, but I hope it can inspire people to modify it, take it apart and run their own!
As per the geography, that's definitely one of the fun discoveries of writing FIST missions, since I almost exclusively wrote fantasy stuff before this. It really started on Google Maps, and trying to figure out what would make sense with the parameters of the mission.
When I found actual historical maps it felt like the icing on the cake - this really grounded it in reality so much more. The real stretch north of Kunduz has a few more villages, so it's about finding the right level of granularity and a balance between real life and "interesting gameplay mechanics". I wanted an earlier ambush to be riskier to execute, with a later ambush feeling providing better terrain, but also less leeway if things go south.
Anyway, I appreciate the thorough analysis, and it's extra motivation to deliver a good final chapter to this saga!
Thanks for the review! I don't know if you've read the post on the creation of this ruleset, but Helldivers 2 is *exactly* what I was going for, so it's really cool to hear you name that!
Hey there, thanks for the comment!
- This is more of a ruling than a rule, but yeah, I think I'd be okay with stacking! Armored enemies can be a pain, so going through the effort of stacking 2 anti-armor measures does merit a reward, I think.
- I'll have a look at the fixed index for the larger typeface document! As per bonus content, I think I'll keep it separate, as it is bonus content - not every user might use them at the same time, and I want to keep a spirit of flexibility.
- That's a good idea! I'm currently juggling quite a few projects, but I'll put this on the idea list! Until then, Cairn has a really good Relic list available here, that should be fully usable with some tweaks.
