This is so good! I just discovered it and played on Miyoo Mini Plus. Got 2,523 m after a few rounds. Reminds of of the Paper Plane minigame on WarioWare.

Your second interpretation is correct: you parry right after the opponent attacks. If the parry is successful, you reveive no damage and take another turn; if it's unsucessful, you take the damage and it's your opponent's turn.
You're also correct in that an attack of 1 would always be parried successfully. You could house rule it so that declaring "parry" would be enough, unless:
A. The attack is a critical hit, which cannot be parried.
B. You're charging, in which case you must receive the damage and then attack.
C. You have a defense of 1, and, for tactical reasons, you'd prefer to reroll your defense.
Keep in mind, however, that Krig: Intervention matches shouldn't be played with that house rule. If you achieve a perfect parry (rolling a 1 on your parry d4), you'll gain a +1 bonus on your next attack.
Also, practically speaking, a player may forget to parry an attack of 1, in which case their error results in damage taken.
I broke my high score, and it saved it again. I tried to find a logic to it, but I couldn't. I saved a state right at the end screen, and if it doesn't want to save the score, it won't.
By the way, not sure if related, but on Onion OS (fake-08, by the way), selecting "Try again" does the same as selecting "Quit"—it just sends you to the start screen.
Amazing game! I really like the look, mechanics, and replayability—one of the best I've tried on PICO-8.
After a lot of rounds, my Onslaught high score is 3,710. I think the difficulty is spot on, as it scales well after reaching the last charge.
My only wish is for more abilities, so that they get less repeated during a round.
Also, to add to the experience, perhaps you could unlock Onslaugh after beating Survival, and Nightmare after reaching a certain score on Onslaught. This way, players have something to look for other than getting a high score.
Edit: Additional feedback after playing more.
- After getting the last charge on Onslaught, I'd prefer not to be asked if I want to continue (instead, maybe move that option to the menu). I've ended many games by mistake.
- I wish the Mimic ability didn't copy an ability that it's already copying. For example, if it's copying Split, and I swap with a crew member that also has Split, I wish it chose another ability (if available).
- Is there a way to show the difference between "attacker" enemies? So that we can plan ahead, instead of waiting for them to shoot.

Krig is a dice combat microgame for two players that blends luck and strategy in fast-paced matches. First released as a print-and-play game in 2019, today it has received a big update with new full-color player boards, new graphic design, and, most importantly, a new expansion that enriches gameplay by adding tactical mechanisms and mitigating luck.
It’s completely free, and you only need two sets of polyhedral dice to play, so give it a try!
