Important Fix for Cider Widevine License Issues on Windows
Hey Cider community!
We’ve identified that many users are experiencing problems with Widevine content in Cider. This issue is related to expired Widevine licenses caused by recent changes in Microsoft’s WebView2 Runtime.
The Solution: Switch to Evergreen Runtime
We’ve created a step-by-step guide showing how to switch Cider to use the Windows Evergreen Runtime instead of our bundled runtime. This quick workaround will restore your ability to access Widevine-protected content while we work on a permanent solution in Cider 3.0.
What You’ll Learn in the Guide:
- How to access Cider’s advanced settings
- Enabling the Evergreen Runtime option
- Properly restarting Cider to apply the changes
- Troubleshooting steps if the initial fix doesn’t work
Unfortunately, Microsoft’s poorly timed updates to WebView2 have caused these Widevine license issues, but our team is actively working on Cider 3.0 which will address these problems permanently.
If you continue to have issues with Widevine content after following the guide, please comment below or reach out in our support channels.
Thanks for your patience!

Hey there, this is intentional behavior!
Cider 2.5.0 changes the way we originally handled backend updates, as now the backend version and frontend version are seperated!
This means your UI version could be 2.5.0 while your backend is now set to 1.0.0 on our new Genten platform.
Hope this solves any confusion.
