Game: Balanced Tactical Skirmish

This is a miniature-agnostic tabletop skirmish game designed to be simple, tightly balanced, fast to play, and focused on tactical decision-making rather than randomness. Many skirmish games intentionally embrace chaos, swingy dice, heavy randomness, or unbalanced unit interactions for the sake of spectacle. However, this game is designed for players who want something different: a clean, even, tightly engineered system where clear tactics and deliberate choices carry the day. It uses only d20s, opposed rolls, and a clean Advantage/Disadvantage system instead of modifiers or arithmetic. The goal is to give players a ruleset where their choices not dice rolls or superior army lists, determine the outcome of each battle.
Core Identity of the Game
- Small model count: Each player controls a small team of about 7-12 individual troops (9 for a Standard Warband).
- Minimal table space: Designed for 2 foot x 2 foot tables (play on almost any kitchen or coffee table)
- Miniature-agnostic: Any miniatures from any range or genre can be used.
- Simple rules: Designed to be learned in minutes and remembered after one game.
- Balanced: Balance between warbands is emphasized over variety, so skilled play becomes the deciding factor in games rather than statistical superiority.
- Low randomness: Tactical skill heavily mitigates and overwhelms the luck of the dice.
- High tactical depth: Positioning, timing, and sequencing determine victory, and the "no pre-measuring" rule demands an extra element of tactical mastery from players.
This is the current beta version of the Balanced Tactical Skirmish rules. We would love for you to download the free PDF of the rules, playtest the game, and give us your honest feedback, criticisms, and suggestions here as you see fit.
