Hey, I've also never played the original or similar games before, but this was a great discovery! Everything seems very well-polished, it does really look and feel like a "professionnal" retro game. I really like the aesthetic, animations and how the distance is perceived.
if I had to find smth negative I'd say the text during shopping phase and the score detail after a round are a bit hard to read because of the "rotation" (for lack of better word) and kinda small police size, but that is very, very minor.
really great work
After reading the comments I expected worse for the movements tbh, it wasn't that bad. I know it's pretty time-consumming to get the exact settings for a player controller that feels just right. I also didn't expect that much different mecanics (dash, wallcling, warp pipes, invincibility pots...) it's great you managed to get all that working.
The fact that the player doesn't have hp and cannot die, only looses points, is pretty weird I think i'd prefer the regular die -> respawn at start of level.
Great job for your first platformer!
The overall game is nice. Music, sounds, visuals are great. But I agree with SyncNone the bugged hit/hurtboxes made the game frustrating to play. I couldn't beat it within a few attempt not because it was too hard but because my frog kept diyng for seemingly no reason.
Still a very good job for a first jam!
I tried running it on Linux, I instantly see the "The End, thanks for playing" screen after pressing Play.
I'll be able to test it on Windows later today or tomorrow, I won't rate it for now but just to give you a heads up
Also congrats on using Pygame! That was my first gamedev lib, and I know how much work you have to do to get anything working (but also the satisfaction that comes with it when it finally does work)!
