Several developers offer a free and paid tier for their products and a third tier with source materials included. The current system only grants access to the higher tiers if the initial purchase price meets a minimum value. This means if you buy tier 2, you have to pay the full price again for tier 3 which discourages users who want to upgrade. If Itch.io offered a way for developers to present their users with upgrade options at the price point difference, it would reduce the barrier to upgrading when users find they desire the features offered in higher tiers. Right now if I must pay 20 dollars for the source material but 10 for the runtimes, I might buy just the runtimes now, but later feel I want to view the source for my own needs. Now I have to put down 20 again rather than paying 10. This is a barrier to payment which would offer more flexibility to developers to present cheaper options and allow their users to upgrade without penalty.
