To be pedantic it was inspired by Japanese games like Syobon Action, but it was indeed the origin of the I Wanna Be The [Thing] naming scheme.
It was NOT inspired by Syobon Action. Syobon Action came to my attention well into IWBTG's development. It was inspired by Owata, which is a lot more similar in tone.
