Instead of going by a fixed schedule for side stories, go by inspiration. Sometimes forced but focus on doing sub arcs to flesh out and explore the characters as something catches your attention in other things, unless you have concrete stuff you want to address at the time. 


I hit stuff like that where I just see something and it fits with one of my stories or gets me to ask a question about one of them that I didn't think of previously

That's kinda what I'm doing. I'm alternating between Main Story Focused updates where you get a bunch of main story scenes and a few side scenes, and Side Story Focused updates where you get a few main story scenes and a good batch of side story scenes. We've been picking characters and brainstorming them, then getting excited and busting out 3 or 4 scenes each. It's a wonderful new workflow.
