If I can make a gameplay suggestion, I think the stamina check should be placed after certain events like finding a merchant or reaching the exit to allow "by the skin of their teeth" type moments where you hit such a space at 0 stamina, but are able to receive an item to bring you back if one appears.

The player could still lose if, example, it's a merchant and they can't afford a stamina recovery potion or it's the exit and the only stamina recovery item offered also puts them at max belly. Or of course no stamina recovery item is available at all or the player neglects to choose one.
