People have different preferences when it comes to language and it's mostly driven by community, which is fine with me. It's a matter of courtesy to address people in ways they prefer, but only as long as you're enjoying their company. No one should have any right to demand politeness of others. Especially in cases where someone's opinion of what "good" speech is differs from the way people talk in the places they are visiting.

I do not see any value at all in wars on language. They cause a lot of harm (including collateral damage to those uninvolved), and they will not accomplish a thing because they only serve to highlight which words that those who are trying to cause offense should use. I don't think that this is a problem tied exclusively to America, but it saddens me to see so much energy being wasted to spread misery with no chance of anyone's lives being improved in the slightest. Sadly, I don't see any solution. Firmly holding my position can help me keep from being swept away into the meaningless fight for a time, but it doesn't stop it from happening.
