Enjoying the hell out of this so far but I've noticed what I think might be a bug. I didn't sign up for either of the two options for free day but it defaulted to one as though I had. Is that supposed to happen?

Yes, it is :) Up to Update 4, although a choice is presented, there was no content for one of the options yet, so you always fell on the same one regardless of choosing it or not!
As of the very soon upcoming Update 5, all choice paths will be present, and the stuff that happens if you choose neither has changed a little so all of it should make sense then!
