Oh really, you should recheck their license again here.

NOw, I assume you are too busy to read the license so here is why Aseprite is bad idea according to the license:

  • NOT OPEN SOURCE!!!! They said, you are not allowed to reverse engineer the sofware except something something applicable by law. Even there is no presence of any open source licenses like GNU GPL or MIT. what MIT you see is the license for the some of the other modules Aseprite use. Another one, is that Yes, you can compile yourself the GitHub project, but if you make mods, YOU CAN ONLY USE IT FOR PERSONAL USE i.e., NO PUBLIC EDITS ALLOWED a.k.a. PROPRIETARY. ugh, how do I say this? yeah, like that.
  • Ironic! this .org domain doesn't make sense because this aseprite is not truly open source and share the binary for costly. despite of self compilation you can do, it's just, why though?! many people doesn't like to compile manually, and want to get it ready! OH and also, they are not non-profit spirit as the org should implies.
  • You want free binary? nah nah! it's old version! what' the point?!
  • there are many ways to animate pixelated raster environments out there that I beg anyone to find with the only terms are: tools involved must be an open source licensed project and binary made are $0 forever, full out of the box!

So please watch your mouth before saying this tool is open source. look out their license!

Just because it is on e.g. GitHub, doesn't mean it guarantees Gratis, Open Source, and FULL VERSION spirit! some projects are pretty much (pardon my dirty mouth)... can-cer.

I hope you understand, that people can benefit the availability while forget and even refuse to take care for the people.

moral is, don't just care for yourself but the others as well.

You couldn't care less about devs... It's only 15$ for god sake. You sure pay a lot more for games or beers every month. What the hell. Aseprite is awesome, just buy it.

that's the trouble.

not all people like not $0 softwares. there are tools that are should have been trusted by professional like Blender for $0.

there numerous ways to develop softwares and be supported, such as donation or so.

also, moving from open source license into proprietary is treason! in our opinion, if they stop being humble, we will also cease our care.

oh yeah, because of this, there is LibreSprite which is last open source Aseprite build that was forked into an independent project. but there are only 25 commits ahead and way 2009 commits behind the original as of today.

Speaking about just $15, Yes I pay some softwares like Yamaha Musicsoft MIDIs, Games, or so. But of course they are not free so I cannot recklessly buy too many softwares. infact, I only have few games I bought with my own money, because prioritizing to waste money on games even useful utility is idiotic!

we must find way that will not waste our money but also has enough quality.

I know, Aseprite is awesome, but we lost it because they are not $0.

we also have seen similar treason like PartedMagic. we forced to move to SystemRescueCD.

in conclusion: not $0 = expensive! Switching to proprietary is one of the worst treason commited!

Not everybody can work for free, friend. Just because there's a tool you like, and the developers happen to want to get paid for their work, doesn't mean they're "evil", as you put it. Your world must be an interesting place... do you get arrested regularly for shoplifting?

We understand that the developer can be a job, and indeed everyone has their favorite way they like to monetize and gain revenue from their job and products which comes in many different forms like donation, paywall, etc.

Well, as you can see, the context regarding the disagreement of paywall our founder, JOELwindows7 had said only points to Software, as he should've implied further if haven't. Obviously, it is make sense to pay to obtain Hardware and shoplifting physical items means thief, which of course we do not encourage doing at any moment at any time. Also, we already know, pirating software is bad idea. Therefore we usually purchase software in legit ways. Although being a good person, we are only excited to purchase video games at the moment. For tools like Aseprite, Adobe, etc. we prefer to avoid such, and rather use any alternative $0 software tools as all as possible, due to our company policy.

As a matter of the fact, we are deeply disappointed regarding the decision Aseprite has made in terms of license, where formerly was a free culture compliant, GNU GPL v2, now went into a proprietary licensed according to their GitHub page. with this change, Aseprite is allowed to restrict redistribution which before, the GNU GPL v2 license requires the product to be redistributable. Beside of their default license, there is a special license for education which can be requested by education institutions.

Fun fact, yesterday we have researched the project Aseprite and found out that you can compile one yourself, absolutely free. unfortunately though, we have not yet compiled the source code ourselves, so we have no idea what outcome will be whether it is the full version or trial version.

We also have to mention regarding the GNU licenses which couple days ago our founder had criticized for reasons like Price. according to his thought, GNU licenses do not explicitly mention the requirement for price of the product, although in any case the source code shall remain visible publicly. in fact, GNU itself had clarified about selling product, and as it says, that GNU allows you to sell the software (in our thought, that is the binary), while still requiring you to share the complete source code available to the public. Restricting selling would otherwise become irony to the freedom philosophy. one of the example project that are licensed GNU based but paywalled binaries are Ardour, and this Aseprite (formerly GNU GPL v2, now proprietary or education). by this matter of fact, our founder then thought to make his own license that are like GNU but disallow paywalling both binaries and source code, however the idea is on hold due to complexity in execution, planning, and embargo.

As the we have went by time, we are going to tell you that we are changing our Reaction Policy, especially regarding paywalled soft copies. as a matter of the fact, our founder had ever started to subscribe a Patreon artist for the purpose of the apology as well as further expanding his collector passion forward. As of right now, we have added some things that we are looking forward to purchase beside video games, however tool isn't the option yet. Apology to Aseprite and other project directors alike. Perhaps next time.

in conclusion, We are apologize for what our founder had said in previous year. What our founder said is indeed bad, and unprofessional. We apologize for your inconvenience. At that time we have not researched enough before we react to any situations. We have learned and still learning.
