You should try doing various things (for example, unrelated stuff to combat). Sometimes you just need to trigger other events.
As far as fixing the game, I actually work on it constantly - I just haven't updated the public version (yet). Hopefully soon. The version you're playing *does* allow you to progress beyond the point you mention. (At least, if you're playing an official version of the game.)
