I think I'm playing it wrong, the boss is upstairs and I can't shoot it because I'm not able to aim the gun in the directions above. I tried with both characters and both modes.
Have you tried holding up key while shooting?
If that doesn't work, try configuring keys in Options -> Controls Options -> Setup Player 1 for player 1
