I can't jump high enough to jump onto them and the enemies don't seem to damage me when I get close. how do I even get past that wall in the beginning?
Unfortunately, we didn't have time to do a tutorial. You have to perform a downward shot (even combined with an early jump) to get a boost up. By using the right mouse button, you can dash, and when you land on top of a bat or zombie, it will push you up.
