There is a fairly novel concept of discovering how arrangement of flowers around the white seeds (accessed with button 3) "influences" its growth - I obviously was not successful at conveying this mechanic to the players. When you're inside, place the white seeds in the middle of the small field and press the green button. Your inventory (accessed with E) should show that you have gained 20 String Seeds which you can plant and harvest.
As for selling, I forgot to make clear that you can only sell what you have "discovered". Please let me know if you have any other questions.
