I actually thought about that control scheme but I thought that it could be very confusing.
As Steve Jobs said: "The good ones are copying, but the best ones are stealing!" :) I think it's a good idea to check some other projects and steal the controls ideas there. Check starblast.io or any other old games like Asteroids, Stardust, Super stardust etc. Good luck and have fun with game making :)
