If you wanted to put this way over the top, you could make modular roads. It would be a huge project, but modular roads could be converted into streams/rivers, or turn into impassable canyons... Retro is great but the lack of diagonals...!
By the way, are you okay with editing? Non-commercial outcome, though that may be a ways away.
