All NPCs are fattened up by events at their locations. In the Demo, Sofi, Ben and Bertha can gain weight :)
How do you make them gain weight?
Characters gain weight when you do their events/activities :)
What? What events? and What activities?
When you visit their locations and talk with them, they'll have activities you can do with them. Sofi's massages, Ben's competitions, and Bertha's sermons are all events where the respective NPCs gain weight.
