Yup! Your decision on what to do with the relic is extremely important, and the game has hinted numerous times as to what the "correct" choice is. Don't worry, though, if you made the "wrong" choice then you'll get one chance later on to fix it :)
As for the mecha update... CK Gundams incoming? Maybe! ;)
