The only upgrade to the farm I have gotten is putting more cowgirls, are there any other steps I have to take?
Well, you'll have the ability to do so. You'll have to purchase the refinery still, in Upper New Ark for $2000 (and getting TO UNA is $500). Renovating the side room also allows you to get 2 fridge units (one free if you are friends with Pixie, the other costs $1000 at the Science Lab) and get another 2 cowgirls and a bull. :)
