Updates aren't automatic unfortunately. This is a bit more advanced than a solo dev is able to do without being on a platform like steam.
You don't have to start the game from scratch, just make sure you save your "Saves" from your game folder. Also just download the patch update if available, if so you just have to put the patch in the folder where the game is located.
