I am really stumped, sorry for not being more helpful. Maybe you can check if any of these work for you?

https://windowsreport.com/folder-reverting-to-read-only/

I'm stumped as well. So far none of these solutions have helped, and every time I tried the command prompt, it gave a message that the format of the command was somehow incorrect, though I've used the command as suggested on every site I've seen.

The apology is not necessary, I know this isn't really your fault, whatever problem is here, it seems to be an obscure one.

I find it annoying, because it seems like there should be a solution, but I can't figure it out. I hope you'll get to play the game again without the issue, possibly without having to buy a new PC. XD

I hope so, though now that you mention that, I didn't have this problem on my previous laptop, that I remember. Could the new computer I've gotten possibly be the problem? It should be able to run this fine, but at this point I can't think of anything else.

If you do have another PC, you should probably try it there. It's very likely something about the PC and/or folder setting that is messing with the "read-only" flag.

I wanted to pop in here and say, after basically giving up on this problem for months, writing it off as a lost cause, I just on a whim ran the game as administrator today, decided to try out one of the scenes that had previously caused the crash...

Ran the scene 3 times, no problem.
Assuming this holds, I am almost annoyed by how simple that was to fix.

Still, thank you for all your help, and for the great game.

Glad you got it solved somehow! I'll keep it in mind as well, if anyone ever has the same problem again.
