Germany actually tried to invade the U.S.S.R in June 22nd 1941. Big mistake, the bitter russian winter did nothing but kill german troops and drain resources. Germany eventually surrendured and pulled out in 1943.
it wasnt just the winter, big strategic engagements like stalingrad and moscow were very significant, the Russians turned into a ressource war, wich the germans could win since they were running low on ressources.
