This was a conscious decision I made at the beginning of this project and will be relevant further in the story. So I can't really answer your Why without spoiling the whole thing :)
Of course, in the real world, different people will have a different reaction to waking up in an unknown place next to unknown people. I could have opted for different reactions, but it was easier for me writing and coding-wise to stick to one only.
