If we couldn't change the way that number is calculated, would having a way to hide the "new" thing entirely be something you would want? Or do you think it would prevent you from checking the feed at all? As you noted, it can be inaccurate sometimes. Since we should this number on every page, it does a faster but less accurate count to prevent slowing things down.
