So if you go into the slime cave core (where the slime dragons are) and loss to one they coat you in slime. You can then go to the fire in the room and it will give you the Slime Strip which you can take to the wizard and have researched. I just don't know if the cutscene with the blacksmith afterward is all that is supposed to happen.

No, there is a separate cutscene that is available after the slime strip is researched. look at this guide https://qazm.itch.io/a-grove-timeline

There IS a scene with him, but you need 10 corruption and to try and look in his tent multiple times in order to trigger it

The cutscene with the blacksmith where he... 'uses' the slime slab is all that's supposed to happen right now. If you haven't triggered that yet... look at the blacksmith's shop and see if you can find the slime slab there!

Thank you, that's what I was wondering. I just thought I was getting a bug where I didn't get the item afterward. Thanks for clearing that up.
