You're stuck as a male. According to the development blog there are no plans to ever add a female version of the playable character (which would require a lot of work, due to all the text needing to be changed).
Game seems easy to mod, though.
Speaking of which, do mods work on Android?
I suppose they do, the Discord server has a channel with tutorials on how to install them.
