i am having a green static effect on top of the game and i have no idea how to fix it... i am running on windows 11, maybe that's the issue? i remember not having any problem last year on my windows 10 laptop

Sounds like a graphic card drivers issue. Could you maybe update them?

What does the magnetic core do?

It's a passive ability that automatically attracts health pickups to you.

Game was fun!  I left with 9 eggs without giving them over and there wasn't a different ending, which was a little unfortunate, but overall the two endings I did find (normal v.s. with eggs) were fun. I liked Spider Friend, not sure what they were in for, they seem chill.

Very good game! Exactly the kind I like!
I've almost won it! I had to write a script to rebind keys though so
for a future update, built in keybindings in the settings would be nice,
as well as a Linux build. I'm running under WINE on Ubuntu.

I like that the boss fights are doable. One of the things I hate
about many Metroidvanias is that I will love them until I get to
a boss and then it will become so ridiculously hard that I either
give up or cheat. Or it will come to a part in the game where the
difficulty level sky rockets astronomically to an extremely more
difficult level than it had been. This game has a very good difficulty
curve as well and I also love the speed of it! It reminds me of
Castle in the Darkness as far as the speed and control, though it's
nowhere as difficult as that game. Many games that are fast are
uncontrollable but this has managed many design feats - keeping
the difficulty curve steady, making the game fast but still extremely
fair and controllable and fun, logical and well laid out puzzles and
level design... 8) Great job all around!

think I won the game?
I made my way to one of the lowest areas, there was a ? and I pressed up...
It gave a statement (I will not say it in case it's a spolier) and then said
"Thanks for playing!" - HOWEVER...
There are still areas I have not uncovered, all the ROCKS?
I have not gained a weapon to allow me to go through or destroy the rocks?
And I only have 6 of the 9 eggs?
Have I only encountered one of many endings? 8)

Congratulations, you did reach the end! But... there's a lot of optional content, including secret bosses you can defeat.

If you're looking for a way to blow up the rocks, I would hint at the lake. ;)

"Castle in the Darkness"

A fellow man of culture, almost feel like replaying that game now :-)

I've been patiently awaiting the sequel for what seems like forever!
I wish they'd give an update. They had multiple trailers out in 2020, been working
on it since 2019 and it has a release date of 2024! For a 2D Metroidvania! Geesh!

didnt know that they even planned a sequel :-D

I can't do anything on the title screen other than select an option (can't enter any of them) help

update: found the button on the keyboard but now my controller won't work with the game

What controller do you have? Most controllers should be supported, but XBox 360/One are recommended.

nintendo switch pro controller (essentially xbox)

I just tried plugging a Switch Pro Controller in the USB port, and it works out of the box for me. You have to use the DPad though, and the A/B and X/Y buttons are swapped compared to an XBox pad.

mine isn't working, maybe due to it being third-party but even still, it should be the same layout/mapping

i loved this game

Thanks! I'm glad you enjoyed it :)

Hi, cool game. How does this lighting system work?

(+1)

It's very simple: I draw a grayscale blurry-edged circle texture with additive blending where I want the light halos. Nothing more ;)

This is a fun little game with a good non-linear game world, packed with upgrades, enemies, and bosses. What I like most about this game is the eerie environment and story-telling. I've also played your zelda-like game, Legends of Aereven, and that was pretty good too.

It seems like you have a lot of good potential in game design and making, so keep at it! 10/10

Thank you! I'm glad you liked my games :)
Be sure to subscribe to my account to get notified of future releases, because I'm currently working on something nice ;)

That's nice to hear, and have done so already.

I just tried out a third game of yours, Tower of Ordal. Despite being a minimalist game in nature, and the fact that I'm not personally the best fan of turn-based combat games, this was still surprisingly enjoyable.

Lightkeeper was my favorite among the three, probably because I'm a fan of metroidvania-styled shooter games. But all three have been entertaining. You could be a professional game developer at this rate. Best of luck with future projects :)

Then, as a spiritual successor to The Lightkeeper, my new game should be right up your alley ;)

(And I am a professional game developer, technically. Though I work as a programmer for a huge AAA company, so those little hobby projects are the only time I get to don my Game Designer hat ^^)

Oh, both of those are great to hear! Will definitely be checking out your new game :)

When I downloaded and ran the game, all I got was a black screen.

Weird. Can you hear the music, or is nothing happening at all? Do you run it through the itch client or directly from the Windows folder?

I could hear the music but all I got was a black screen.  And I ran the game directly from the windows .zip file (once I extracted it).

Sounds like an OpenGL issue. Do you know what graphic card model you have? Are your drivers up to date?

I have Opengl 2.0.

That would explain it. The Lightkeeper requires OpenGL 4.0 or newer. I believe most graphic cards nowadays can handle it (including Intel-based laptops, provided they're not too old), so upgrading your GPU drivers may help.

A very nice game.
Thanks for making it. Made for an enjoyable evening. :)

Thank you for playing it. Glad you liked it! ;)

About a week ago, I was itching to play a good metroidvania after finishing Hollow Knight, and this game was the only game on itch.io to scratch that itch. I liked it enough to speedrun it and I have gotten it down to roughly 15 minutes.

Wow, very glad you liked it! Fun fact: I started playing Hollow Knight at the end of The Lightkeeper's development and almost quit because I felt very inadequate in comparison. Thankfully I got over it when I realized HK was also giving Super Metroid and Symphony of the Night a run for their money ^^. So hearing my game is scratching the same kind of itch is quite the praise! ;)

I got stuck immediately, wasnt able to jump out of a cave because it is 1 block taller than my jump :/

Where exactly are you stuck? Can you show me a screenshot? Thanks.

https://prnt.sc/wnw91m

I think i need to get the double jump before i go here. anyways i  restarted the game and finished it

It's weird, I can reach it without the double jump. Were you maybe pressing the direction after jumping? I'm used to doing it before, the momentum may explain the difference.

maybe, i tried it like 20 times and i still cant get there. but oh well.

While i did finish the game i didnt complete the keys, achievement and secrets, perhaps you can tell me some of them?

https://prnt.sc/wnweqz

Sure! The very last item is the reward for collecting all the eggs. The one between the garden prop and the skull can be found in the same general area you found them. Once you have it, you can trigger a hidden boss fight nearby, and the last missing item will be the trophy for defeating it. Hope it helps! ;)

This is a really cool game. Was sad to see it end so soon. If you see this, do you have any idea how long this took to make, I've recently been learning SDL.

Glad you enjoyed the game! ;)

It took three months (working on mornings, lunch breaks, evenings and weekends) to make the first released version, and another three for the final one (with a thankfully more leisurely pace). That being said, I had most of the tech and tools ready when I started, and had done a few similar prototypes in the past (some enemies are lifted straight from them). Also, I had a soft deadline that helped me scope small and keep me focused and on track, which helped.

nevermind, found it in an old area.
sure hope that we will get a sequel one day :-9
