I adore the level of detail and creativity. Playing against any boss was so much fun, and i loved all the act1 bosses. Challenging, but not impossible. I loved the fact that the levels have multiple paths because i wouldnt expect that from an indie sonic game. The sprite-work is soooo goood! I'm a total fan.

Now here are some critics from me:

Contents:

  1. Confusing paths in some stages
  2. Short rebound period after getting hit
  3. Enemies/obstacles always in the way, no running allowed
  4. Rings in special stages arrive too fast
  5. It was hard to find any secret rings after zone 2.
  6. Cant move mid air while spindashing
  7. In some bossfights rings go out of screen when getting hit
  8. You can stand still and not lose the ring vs the final boss pt1

Elaborate version

  1. Sometimes i felt lost and didn't know where to go next, especially in zone 2 even with the knuckles statues, that one is all over the place.
  2. Very short "invincibility" time after getting hit, shorter than in the original games. It makes the game a bit frustrating at times, examples include: no time to escape long arrays of spikes once you get poked, some bosses like the puppet tails or puppet egg machine pt1 chase you mid air and cause immediate death after a hit.
  3. I would constantly bump into enemies/obstacles without the chance to react. I played as sonic and i couldn't run. Not the best idea for sonic in my opinion. Some sonic games are bashed because of this, and i think it is justified.
  4. The rings in special stages come out without a sense of distance. In the original games they would arrive in 2-3 frames, taking about 2 seconds to get to you, being zoomed while closing in. The bombs do so, but the rings dont. It was very hard to react on time even with jumping.
  5. In most of the zones i couldn't find the special stages. It may be me, or the fact that they're put in places i didn't even know existed. In the original games i could always find the special stage rings. I did explore the levels quite a bit as sonic.
  6. Bad mid air mechanics - When spin dashing, you cant move mid air. This is not the case in the original games i believe (played sonic mania recently).
  7. Some bossfights are only harder because the rings are going out of bounds when you get hit (spring stadium zone and gene gadget zone act1 bosses) or are irrecoverable (act1 panic puppet zone boss).
  8. You can stand, get hit by the flamethrower or minigun, and recover the ring without moving vs the final boss pt 1 if you point the character to the right.

I know most of these things are meant as increased difficulty, but all they do is make the player invest much more time into the game, or they add more frustration to it. 2D platformers, in my opinion, are casual games, and this kind of difficulty is not what I'm looking for.

All this said, the game was still very enjoyable and fun to play. As someone who liked 3D sonic, i loved playing it in 2D here and i did see the similarity.

Unclear things

  1. Starting the game as amy has overwritten my sonic game without warning, so i couldnt pick stages anymore. Is there a way to revert that?
  2. No back button in the menu? Did i miss it?
  3. The colors in the game seem to be a bit darker than the rest of my screen, is it just me?

I'd love to see an unlockable bossfights only mode! I bet your game would be so popular if you allowed this mode from the start (for people who can't invest as much time in the game as you'd like them to). Seeing the fights on youtube brought me joy and i immediately searched for the download link.

Also the unnamed mecha sonic, damn...nice touch. I played sonic adventure, and that....that mecha sonic is something :)

All the best!

Hello there! Thanks for playing, enjoying the game and providing some feedback!

3D2D is meant to be replayed, and with repeated play you'll not only learn the levels and enemy positioning but will start to take advantage of the environment and the various paths as you play with different characters. In terms of difficulty it is closer to Sonic 2 SMS which was harder than most, but very rewarding once mastered.

The mid air mechanic is exactly like in the mega drive classics: you don't have air control if you jump after a spin dash. Don't forget that Sonic has the insta shield as his ability, which restores air control when used. He is the only character that can regain air control after a spin dash in sonic 3 & Knuckles.

The save game system is a single slot, so you lose your progress on a new game. However it remembers how many extras you unlocked, and once you unlock everything your save game will become an "All clear" save, and you'll be able to choose any character and any level without restrictions.
