Well, for me it took a lot of time. more than 4 years to be exact. And a lot of posts on social media, like twitter, facebook, deviantart and so on. The first game I released brought me 20 people that supported my work. but for me it was enough to stay motivated and I kept working. I am not sure if you have a game with pictures or a pure novel, a book...but there are a lot of places where you can share both. Post a small scene of your game or a section of your story everywhere you can and are allowed to, see if people like it and build a following.
