Admittedly it is eerie and awkward. However I think that's part of the game's intention. Remember it isn't supposed to be some feel-good place altogether like early Mario game levels, or animal crossing; Juice Galaxy has a spooky side too. The protagonist's disturbing gait and appearance are an aspect of this.
