Patreon is a very popular platform, so I'm sure it is safe in the same way that eBay or Amazon are considered safe. Of course "safe" is a relative term, so this completely depend on yourself for how comfortable you feel about it.
In regards to the Patreon version, yes this issue has already been resolved. As long as you are a Patreon subscriber and at the appropriate tier, you should be able to download and use Jav-It just fine.
